McLaren hypercar previewed in teaser image

The McLaren hyper car that is set to become the spiritual successor to the British Formula One company's renowned 1990s F1 road car has been previewed in an aerodynamic laser show-style image.

McLaren's wind tunnel-inspired teaser picture, which features colourful lines mimicking airflow over the ghosted bodywork of the new supercar, has been released ahead of a social media campaign that will reveal more information in the build up to its launch at the 2012 Paris motor show on Thursday 27th September.

"The next exciting chapter for McLaren Automotive will begin in Paris later this month, when the British sportscar company makes its international motor show debut," said the company in the accompanying release.

"McLaren Automotive will use this stage to showcase future plans, and unveil to the world its strategy to fast forward the world of automotive."

Insiders have told CarAdvice that the new McLaren flagship, reportedly due in 2014, will "look mindblowingly good" and feature more radical styling than the McLaren MP4-12 supercar that has been criticised from many quarters for being too conservative.

The McLaren flagship could be powered by a V10 or the same 3.8-litre V8 as the MP4-12 but boosted by a Formula One-style KERS (kinetic energy recovery system) to produce considerably more power and speed.

Performance will need to be mighty to allow the McLaren to compete with other upcoming hypercars such as the Ferrari Enzo replacement and the Porsche 918 Spyder.

As with the MP4-12C, expect a number of technological links to Formula One, the motor sport where McLaren has made its name.
