Aston Martin Virage to be axed
The Aston Martin Virage will be discontinued after less than two years on sale as the British sports car manufacturer seeks to simplify its line-up.
Aston Martin had high hopes when it revived the nameplate in March 2011 with the launch of the Virage coupe and Volante models.
The Virage was supposed to sit neatly between the Aston Martin DB9 and DBS, and as such received a more powerful version of the DB9’s 6.0-litre V12 – upping power by 15kW and flattening the torque curve.
Sales of the Virage have actually been quite promising, having exceeded 1000 units around the world, especially given the car’s $371,300 price tag (before on-road costs).
But the Virage nameplate will be axed from Aston Martin’s line-up in the coming months thereby simplifying the variants offered at the top-end of its range.
Eliminating the Virage will almost certainly mean a higher asking price for the new DB9, which is set to take the place of the deleted mid-range model.
The new, more powerful DB9 will reportedly adopt more aggressive styling cues similar to the Virage.
The restructuring will create more clarity for Aston Martin customers, with just two versions offered: the new DB9 and the range-topping Vanquish (pictured above) to replace the DBS.
