Volkswagen Trimaran Concept previews 2025 autonomous vehicle

Sponsored by Volkswagen and developed at Sweden's Umea Institute of Design, the Volkswagen Trimaran Concept by student Kosin Voravattayagon is a study of a futuristic autonomous vehicle, which could hit the streets by 2025.

The design focuses on Generation Z buyers who will begin purchasing cars in 2025 in a world where car-pooling is expected to be in full swing and fully autonomous driving is a reality.

It’s for that reason the Volkswagen Trimaran Concept features a fully flexible design architecture that allows for different interior layouts such as ‘car sharing’ and ‘isolation’ modes.

The design allows the owner to switch from one mode to the other by the use of three specific design elements: the cocoon, circular partitions and the floor geometry.

In isolation mode, passengers can have their own space, allowing the owner to be comfortable even when taking in other passengers during car-pooling runs. In this mode the seats can slide forwards and backwards around the cockpit.

But in the so-called participation mode, passengers are able to sit together in the centre of the vehicle and chat with each other.

The exterior shape and design elements of the concept are said to evolve Volkswagen’s aesthetic design language.
