Mercedes-Benz Citan: full specifications of compact work van

Developed in collaboration with the Renault-Nissan alliance, the versatile Mercedes Citan shares components with the Renault Kangoo van and will be produced alongside it at the French car maker’s assembly plant in Maubeuge.

The Mercedes-Benz Citan is available in a range of different configurations, including three distinct body lengths and wheelbases; two-, three- and five-seat cabins; and four different engine options.

Mercedes-Benz Australia’s Jerry Stamoulis confirmed the Citan was scheduled to go on sale in our market in the second half of 2013, and said decisions about the brand’s local offering would be finalised early next year.

The local line-up is expected to feature the Citan 112 petrol variant, which is powered by an 85kW/190Nm 1.2-litre turbocharged direct-injection engine.

Also available overseas will be three different tunes of a 1.5-litre diesel engine, producing 56kW/180Nm, 67kW/200Nm and 82kW/240Nm. Australia is likely to get the most powerful version, dubbed Citan 111 CDI, when it is added to the global line-up along with the petrol option around the middle of 2013 – a few months after the initial launch of the less-powerful diesels.

The Citan 111 CDI and 112 are both equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, while the lower-powered diesels get a five-speed manual gearbox.

Three distinct vehicles sizes will be available globally: compact, long and extra long.

The Citan compact is 3937mm long, 1829mm wide and 181mm tall, features a maximum payload of 490kg and a load compartment volume of 2.4m³.

The Citan long measures 4321/1829/1816mm, has a maximum payload of 775kg and a load volume of 3.1m³, while the Citan extra long stretches to 4705/1829/1839mm, boasts a maximum payload of 810kg and a load compartment volume of 3.8m³.

The Mercedes-Benz Citan will be offered with the choice of a conventional two-seat layout, three-seat bench or as a five-seat passenger version designed to take on the Volkswagen Caddy Life.

The Citan will also be offered with a range of door configurations, including sliding side door, top-hinged tailgate and side-hinge rear barn doors, depending on the vehicle size and seat layout.

Mercedes promises the Citan will offer class-leading safety, with all models benefitting from adaptive electronic stability control that takes the vehicles’ load into account and up to six airbags for passenger variants.
