Toyota 86 gets 600kW Speedhunters treatment

With the rear-wheel drive Toyota 86 being a decidedly brilliant platform for a drift car, the lads at enthusiast website Speedhunters decided nearly 600kW would also be a good idea.

Speedhunters and suspension specialists KW have teamed up to create the Toyota 86X to compete in drift competitions in Norway and across Europe.

With large amounts of tyre-frying ability required, the standard 147kW/205Nm Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ 2.0-litre naturally aspirated ‘Boxer’ motor has been swapped for an extreme version of a 2JZ-GTE turbocharged straight-six engine, from the 86's Toyota Supra big brother, stroked from 3.0-litres to 3.4-litres and tuned to produce a monstrous 597kW and 1000Nm at the wheels.

There is also a second motor available based on the same Toyota powerplant but with ‘only’ 477kW and 802Nm.

The hyper engine is joined by a triple-plate racing clutch, custom flywheel, four-speed transmission, rear-mounted radiator and KW racing suspension. The fully stripped interior features a roll cage, Sparco bucket race seats and racing harnesses.

The Toyota 86X wears a TRA Kyoto 6666 Customs GT Rodeo Special Rocket Bunny wide body prototype bodykit featuring a much increased guard width compared with the standard 86.

The car recently competed in the Gatebil drift competition in Norway, and is due to tour Europe with Norwegian racer Frederic Aasbo at the reins.

The Toyota 86X isn’t the first Toyota 86 drift car to hit the scene, with Ken Gushi’s Scion FR-S competing in the American Formula D series sporting a Cosworth-built turbocharged Subaru EJ25 motor and 'Max' Orido's Lexus V8-powered Toyota 86 sliding around in Japan's D1 Grand Prix.
