Ferrari F12 Berlinetta: Alonso and Massa unleash in new Italian supercar

Ferrari's Formula One guns Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa have gone head to head in the all-new Ferrari F12 Berlinetta in the lead-up to the first press drives of the brand’s quickest ever road car in Italy this week.

Ferrari released a video of the two drivers dicing in identical red F12 Berlinettas around its Fiorano test track, which Ferrari says its new performance flagship can lap in just 1min23secs. That time makes it the fastest Ferrari road car of all time, ahead of the 599 GTO (1:24) and the Enzo (1:25).

Ferrari has also released a number of new photos of the F12 Berlinetta, revealing the car out of the studio, on the move and on the track officially for the first time.

Originally unveiled in March ahead of the 2012 Geneva motor show, Ferrari describes the F12 Berlinetta as the first in a “new generation of Ferrari 12-cylinder supercars”, set to be joined by the Enzo replacement later this year.

Superseding the Ferrari 599, the F12 Berlinetta’s 6.3-litre V12 produces 544kW of power at 8500rpm and 690Nm of torque at 6000rpm, with 552Nm available from just 2500rpm.

Sharing its seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with the California, 458 Italia and FF, the F12 Berlinetta accelerates from 0-100km/h in 3.1 seconds and has a top speed in excess of 340km/h.

The Ferrari F12 Berlinetta goes on sale in Australia at the beginning of 2013, with prices and specifications to be revealed closer to its local launch. The old 599 was priced from $677,250.
