SRT Viper GTS-R: snake goes racing once more

The hardcore SRT Viper GTS-R will make its racing debut next month, competing in the GT class of the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

Following April's unveiling of the 477kW/814Nm SRT Viper and Viper GTS at the New York auto show, SRT says the new Viper GTS-R will continue a racing heritage that started back in 1996 when the first GTS-R entered GT racing.

"The new SRT Viper GTS-R represents a rebirth for us on the race track," SRT president and CEO Ralph Gilles said.

Two SRT Viper GTS-Rs, #91 and #93, will compete in the GT class of the ALMS, which consists of lightly modified two-wheel-drive racecars based on production specification vehicles producing between 335-372kW and reaching top speeds just shy of 300km/h.

The Vipers will be up against the likes of the Aston Martin Vantage, BMW M3, Ferrari 458 Italia and Porsche GT3.

The cars' first event will be the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Challenge on August 4, a three-hour endurance race, but the SRT Motorsports team is planning to compete full-time in next year's 2013 series.
