Mazda Flairwagon: Micro box not for Oz

Mazda has added the Mazda Flairwagon, a new "micro-mini tall wagon", to its line-up in Japan.

The Flairwagon comfortably seats four adults, with space being the car's main drawcard. Its front bench seats, dash-mounted shifter and dimensions of 1365mm high and 2070mm long ensure ample head and legroom, even for rear occupants. Mazda says the split-fold rear seats can be folded away flat with ease providing enough space to accommodate a standard 27-inch bicycle.

Sliding rear doors on both sides featuring 'Easy Closure' – a function that closes the doors automatically once in a half-closed position – and a low-level rear step make ingress and egress simple, particularly in tight parking situations. An upper-level chillable glove box located in front of the passenger seat is also joined by a conventional lower-level glove box and an under-seat storage box.

Three variations of the Flairwagon are offered; LS, XS and TS, with all models available in either front- or all-wheel drive. All are powered by a 660cc DOHC engine with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), however the TS scores a turbo as well. Fuel economy ranges from 4.8 to 5.8 litres per 100km based on the Japanese JC08 mode test cycle.

There is a front-wheel-drive-only special edition IS Limited Flairwagon too that features the same motor but fitted with a stop-start system that achieves 4.5L/100km.

The Mazda Flairwagon comes in five exterior body colors: Aqua Veil Blue Pearl Metallic, Bloom Pink Metallic, Silky Silver Metallic, Pearl White and Bluish Black Pearl, letting owners express their individual flair.

Unfortunately for fans of Japan's Kei cars, the Flairwagon won't be sold in Australia.
