BMW M5 and M6 manual option secured for US

BMW has ensured its more enthusiastic BMW M5 and M6 fans in the US will have the opportunity to shift gears themselves, confirming a six-speed manual transmission option will join the standard seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

Car and Driver reports the 'stick' will be available on both the coupe and convertible versions of the BMW M6 next year or 2014 after the initial auto-only run of launch vehicles.

While most markets across Europe - and Australia - have taken to the quicker shifts and improved fuel economy of the automated transmission, consumers in the US have persevered with continued requests for the traditional cog-swapper.

BMW Australia's Product Communications Manager Scott Croaker told CarAdvice the manual transmission is not being considered for the local market as demand from consumers simply hasn't been there. A bit sad really.
