Maserati to mask diesel engine note
The first Maserati diesel engines won't taint the brand's reputation of beautiful sounding engine notes, at least, not from the inside.
Maserati vice-president of product development Roberto Corradi has told What Car? that not only is a diesel engine "essential" for its upcoming Maserati Kubang SUV but that the company is looking at ways to mask the diesel engine note through the car's stereo system, making it sound more in line with the marque's famous V8 powerplants.
The concept itself is not a new one with brands like BMW already incorporating active sound technology to enhance the aural experience for drivers of its new BMW M5 as the new engine's twin-turbo V8 didn't inspire the same emotional response as the previous V10.
The Kubang (potentially to be called the 'Cinqueporte', which means 'five-door') is due in 2013 and will ride on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee thanks to the Fiat-Chrysler alliance. Specific engine details are yet to be confirmed.
A new mid-sized sedan designed to slot in below the brand's flagship Quattroporte - the next-generation of which is expected next year - will join the range in 2014.
