Renault Clio IV: teaser image leaked

The first official teaser image of the all-new Renault Clio IV has leaked online ahead of the city car’s premiere at the 2012 Paris motor show in September.

The heavily cropped rear three-quarter image – first published by French website blogautomobile – reveals the new Clio’s delicate taillight design, muscular rear wheel arches and discreet rear door handles concealed in the C-pillars.

The image supports spy photographs of the Renault Clio IV published in March, which gave us an unhindered look at the car’s proportions and a first impression of the front-end styling, which features a Fluence-inspired lower intake and a badge-hugging grille that flows into the headlights.

While Renault Australia’s current Clio line-up includes only the high-performance Renault Sport models that start from $36,490, local spokeswoman Emily Ambrosy today confirmed the brand would introduce the full Clio IV range, including entry-level models that should be half the price of the current sports variants.

Timing hasn’t been finalised yet, although late last year Renault Australia managing director Justin Hocevar said he was hopeful of bringing the Clio here within six months of its Paris unveiling, pointing at a local launch in the first half of 2013.

Ambrosy said specifications were still to be finalised but insisted everything was on the table, including super frugal petrol and diesel engines.

Our sources tell us a range of three- and four-cylinder engines will be offered in international markets, including an efficient 900cc petrol unit with around 66kW of power.

The all-new Clio will be available only as a five-door hatch. It will be lower and wider than the outgoing third-generation model, and as much as 100kg lighter, bringing its weight closer to 1000kg.

Just four Renault Sport Clio models were sold in Australia in the first quarter of 2012, but the addition of entry-level models will see Renault go head to head with its traditional French rivals – Peugeot 208 and Citroen C3 – as well as the Volkswagen Polo, Skoda Fabia and the rest of the cars in the popular light segment.
