Lamborghini Huracan: Italian trademarks new supercar name

Lamborghini may have given us an early insight into its future supercar line-up by trademarking the name ‘Huracan’.

Revealed by US magazine Car and Driver, Huracan is the name widely tipped to be applied either to the replacement for the Gallardo (due next year) or the production version of the Urus SUV concept, which made its international debut at the 2012 Beijing motor show earlier this month and should reach production by 2015.

Huracan is the Spanish word for hurricane, and is also the name of the ancient Mayan god of wind, storm and fire.

The patent filing comes just weeks after another similar trademark action by the iconic Italian manufacturer, which earlier this month locked away the name ‘Deimos’.

Deimos, which means dread in Greek, was the personification of terror in Greek mythology. Many believe the Deimos name is also destined for either the successor to the Gallardo or the production Urus.

In a break from recent tradition, neither name has an obvious link to bullfighting as do Murcielago, Gallardo, Reventon and Aventador; potentially foreshadowing a philosophical shift in the brand’s naming structure.

Car and Driver also notes Lamborghini rarely trademarks a name for no good reason, implying that a Lamborghini Huracan, in one form or another, is expected to surface in the not-too-distant future.
