More Toyota Priuses Coming To Australia

Toyota has announced that Toyota Japan has increased the supply allocation for the hybrid-powered Toyota Prius to Australia. Internationally, Toyota has sold nearly 650,000 of the green cars (by end of 2006). With over 185,000 Toyota Prius sold in 2006.

The Toyota Prius is the number one-selling hybrid vehicle in Australia (The Civic Hybrid is also worth a mention as it was rated the cheapest Hybrid car to own). Local sales of Prius in Australia in 2006 reached 1974 units, a 39 per cent increase on the previous year's result.

Over 5,000 Prius have been sold in Australia since its official local launch at the 2001 Sydney Motor Show. Second-generation Prius was launched in November 2003 and was followed by an upgrade in November 2005.

"Prius has proved to be an important and historic addition to the Toyota line-up since its release in Australia over five years ago. By taking a position of leadership of making advanced hybrid technology available to the buying public, Toyota has been able to refine Prius in real-world conditions.

"The economies of scale gained by being the world's number one hybrid vehicle mean Prius has had more upgrades than its hybrid rivals. Changes in Toyota's hybrid production allocation for Australia now mean that local supply of Prius will be enhanced into the foreseeable future." said David Buttner, Toyota Australia's senior executive director of sales and marketing.

2007 looks to be the best year for the Toyota Prius, with over 195 Prius sold just in January 2007, a 96 per cent increase on the same month in 2006!
