Porsche takes over Italian proving ground

The Porsche Engineering Group has obtained an automotive proving ground in Apulia in southern Italy.

Originally built in 1975, the Nardò Technical Centre was in the hands of Italian company Prototipo SpA before Porsche gained control.

Porsche intends to optimise the facility when it gets the keys next month, making it available for clients for what Porsche calls “testing and trials” purposes.

The Nardò Technical Centre spans over 700 hectares and includes a 6.2 kilometre handling circuit, a 12.5 kilometre oval circuit, workshops and provisions for simulating varying weather conditions and road surfaces.

The new acquisition will join Porsche’s current Development Centre in Weissach near Stuttgart and be available for those in the automotive industry and other sectors worldwide to rent as well as the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone (pictured below).

“With its rich array of facilities, from dynamic surfaces to acoustic and off-road sections coupled with the numerous workshops, our clients can continue to make extensive use of Nardò for their vehicle trials in the future as well,” said CEO of Porsche Engineering Malte Radmann.

Given that Prototipo SpA is owned by Gian Mario Rossignolo, the man who bought De Tomaso in 2009, the handover may result in Rossignolo having more time to lead a resurgence of the Italian car maker.
