Opel Astra Cabriolet spy shots

Our spy photographers have captured images of an early prototype of the fourth-generation Opel Astra Cabriolet undergoing winter testing in Europe.

The prototype is heavily camouflaged, although it’s obvious from the headlights, grille and taillights that the soft-top is based on the existing Astra hatch.

Don’t despair if the ill-fitting tent-like roof doesn’t appeal. It’s still early days in the development of the new Astra Cabriolet, and a tighter cover will replace this temporary top by the time it reaches production.

Our sources tell us that, unlike the previous Opel Astra TwinTop, which featured a three-piece folding hardtop roof, the new Astra Cabriolet will revert to a soft-top structure like the first- and second-generation versions.

Opel Australia’s Michelle Lang said the local brand would definitely consider the Astra Cabriolet for our market, but said its international launch was too far away to speculate further on a local introduction.

Lang said the Cabriolet was not due to go into production until late 2013 or early 2014.

The Astra nameplate will make a return to Australia in the third quarter of this year when Opel launches the five-door hatch, Sports Tourer wagon and the three-door GTC coupe. It is also desperate to add the high-performance Astra OPC to its line-up, but has not secured that vehicle for our market at this stage.

Holden successfully distributed the Astra Cabriolet in Australia between 2001 and 2010. Over the decade, it sold 10,851 second- and third-gen models, with sales peaking at 2470 in 2003.
