Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe Black Series unleashed

The first of the highly exclusive Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe Black Series cars has been specially flown in from Germany for this weekend’s Australian Formula One Grand Prix event.

Mercedes-Benz Australia was initially allocated 32 C63 AMG Coupe Black Series and all have been sold prior to their arrival here. The order book also contains another 10 or more firm orders, which Mercedes-Benz hopes to fulfil with a second allocation, but is still waiting for final sign-off from head office in Germany.

With a displacement of 6.2 litres (naturally aspirated) producing 380kW and 620Nm, the C63 AMG Black Series is the most powerful C-Class of all time. The benchmark 0-100km/h sprint takes just 4.2 seconds and its top speed is electronically limited to 300km/h versus 250km/h for the standard C63 AMG car. That’s also a gain of 24kW and 20Nm over the C63 Coupe with the optional performance package.

Inspired by the SLS AMG GT3 customer sports car and engineered for track use, the C63 AMG Black Series is equipped with adjustable coil-over sports suspension and an AMG composite braking system along with a host of other features exclusive to the model.

Buyers can also choose the optional AMG track package, which includes special semi-slick sports tyres and active rear-axle transmission cooling.

Further exclusivity can be obtained with the optional aerodynamics package, which boasts a specially tuned front splitter and a manually adjustable carbonfibre rear aerofoil.

The C63 AMG Black Series is available as either a two- or four-seater; with the two-seater gaining AMG sports bucket seats while the four-seat option means the car retains the same seats as its C63 coupe sibling.

The car's 19-inch ten-spoke light alloy forged wheels are shod with 255/35 series rubber up front and 285/30 series at the rear.

The seven-speed AMG MCT dual-clutch transmission transfers the power to the rear wheels with four driving modes including ‘race start’.

The standard specification for the C63 AMG Black Series includes:

AMG illuminated door sills with AMG logo
AMG sports pedals in brushed stainless steel, with rubber studs
THERMATIC automatic climate control
KEYLESS-GO
Tinted side/rear windows
AMG Exterior Carbon-Fibre package (front splitter, exterior mirror housing, inserts on the side panel, diffuser insert and spoiler lip in genuine carbonfibre)
AMG carbon-fibre trim (in the upper trim level)

Key features of the C63 AMG Black Series engine are:

Torsionally stiff full aluminium crankcase in closed deck design, with a bedplate construction for the lower crankcase section
Integral oil windage tray to help reduce foaming of the engine oil
Finely balanced, lightweight forged steel crankshaft
Forged crack connecting rods in lightweight construction
Forged pistons made from a highly durable, ultra heat- resistant alloy
Piston crowns cooled through pressure-controlled oil-spray nozzles
Magnesium variable intake manifold with two integral throttle valves to give a steep torque curve and excellent performance
Vertical intake and exhaust ducts
Four-valve-per-cylinder design, valve control linkage using bucket tappets
Continuous camshaft adjustment on the intake and exhaust sides
Engine cooling based on the cross-flow principle
Variable control of the coolant temperature
Highly effective exhaust gas emission control meeting the EU5 emissions compliance

The C63 AMG Black Series is priced from $245,000 (Manufacturer’s List Price).
