Touring Superleggera Disco Volante: Return of the Flying Saucer

The Flying Saucer is back! The Touring Superleggera Disco Volante 2012 has been unveiled at the Geneva motor show, celebrating the 60th anniversary of the 1952 Alfa Romeo Disco Volante sports car.

The Disco Volante 2012 may look like just another concept car, but the Milan-based Italian coachbuilder says it will produce a “very limited run” of the sexy coupe for customers who desire an exclusive, sporty grand tourer.

The Disco Volante (which means ‘Flying Saucer’ in Italian) borrows its spaceframe chassis and mechanical package from the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione.

A 4.7-litre V8 sits under the bonnet, producing 330kW of power and 480Nm of torque. A six-speed paddle-shift transmission sends power to the rear wheels, and Touring Superleggera says its inherited limited-slip differential, double-wishbone suspension and large ventilated brakes create precise, agile and thrilling driving dynamics.

The modern interpretation of the Disco Volante portrays many of the unique styling elements of the original, including the three-part grille, flat front wheel arch line, muscular rear haunches and overall ‘spaceship’ feel.

The body is constructed from hand-beaten aluminium panels and carbon fibre, living up to the high-tech, futuristic theme.

The original Alfa Romeo Disco Volante (also called the 1900 C 52) was available in three different body styles: an open-top and two different coupes. It was powered by a 118kW 2.0-litre engine and its wind tunnel-tested aerodynamic body helped it reach a top speed of 220km/h.

Touring Superleggera is yet to confirm pricing or production details for the Disco Volante 2012.
