Hyundai Elantra Coupe unveiled

The Hyundai Elantra Coupe has just been unveiled at the Chicago motorshow sporting a 1.8-litre naturally aspirated engine (110kW of power and 177Nm of torque) with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

The two-door sport coupe is yet another sign that the world’s fifth-largest automaker is looking to expand its appeal amongst younger and enthusiast buyers.

Although not destined for Australia in the foreseeable future, the Elantra Coupe is set to ride on the worldwide sales success of the Elantra sedan. Hyundai Australia sold 710 Elantra sedans in January, which is still far shy of the near 2,000 number for the i30.

The North American Elantra Coupe features a 7-inch touch-screen satellite navigation system with built in rear-view camera and iPod®/USB inputs, this is a good indication of the entertainment system we are likely to get in the top of the range Hyundai vehicles later in the year.

The two-door Elantra goes up against the Kia Koup and Civic Coupe (not available in Australia) but offers noticeably more interior and cargo volume than both its direct competitors.

The Elantra Coupe, which will land in North American dealerships over the next few months, rides on McPherson strut front suspension, with coil springs and gas shock absorbers whilst the rear makes do with a lightweight coupled torsion beam.

If the car was made for right-hand drive markets, should Hyundai bring this to Australia? Check out the gallery for more pictures.
