Kia Track-ster Concept teaser sketch

Kia has released a preview of the Kia Track-ster Concept it plans to unveil at the 2012 Chicago auto show, starting February 8.

Based on the Kia Soul, the Track-ster is a sporty two-door version, taking a fresh approach to the boxy compact vehicle segment. It features swift panel lines, a high waistline, and bolstered wheel arches.

The concept also features deep heat-extraction vents in the front guards blending into the doors, and large alloy wheels. It was designed at Kia's Californian design studio and is pitched as a pure concept and not a preview of an upcoming production model.

Chief designer at the studio Tom Kearns says the Track-ster showcases an extension of the company's 'rebellious, individual and urban character' design philosophy.

Official specifications are yet to be revealed, however, Kia says it envisages the Track-ster as having a sporty petrol engine. Reports suggest the engine could be a version of the upcoming Veloster Turbo 1.6-litre GDI four-cylinder unit, producing around 150kW.

Full details and images will be revealed at the Chicago show next week.
