Audi adds twin-turbo V6 diesel to A6 and A7

Audi has confirmed the details of the most powerful V6 diesel engine in the company’s history.

The A6 sedan, Avant and Allroad and the A7 Sportback all benefit from the new twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre engine, with European sales starting this month.

Producing 230kW of power (3900-4500rpm) and 650Nm of torque (1450-2800rpm), the 3.0 BiTDI rockets the A6 from 0-100km/h in 5.1 seconds, and takes the A7 to the mark in 5.3 seconds.

Despite its performance attributes, the new twin-turbo A6 and A7 models return combined cycle fuel consumption of 6.4 litres per 100km.

Audi Australia’s Shaun Cleary told CarAdvice the engine is under consideration for our market, but could not confirm if or when it would arrive down under.

Diesels account for more than half of all local A6 and A7 sales: 55 per cent of A6s and 60 per cent of A7s.

The single-turbo 180kW/500Nm 3.0 TDI is currently the most powerful V6 diesel in Audi Australia’s A6/A7 line-ups.

Like Audi’s existing TDI engines, the new 3.0 BiTDI incorporates start-stop technology, brake energy regeneration and a thermal management system that quickly brings oil and coolant up to optimal operating temperatures.

The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and the brand’s quattro all-wheel-drive system.

All 3.0 BiTDI A6 and A7 models are also equipped with a sound actuator, which Audi says “transforms the typical TDI exhaust note into a more sonorous roar”, similar to a high-power petrol engine.
