2012 Mini Baker Street, Bayswater coming in May

With 189 days until the start of the 2012 London Olympics, homegrown premium small-car manufacturer Mini has unveiled two new special edition models to promote the city in anticipation of the Games.

The Mini Baker Street and the Mini Bayswater aim to spread “contemporary London style” around the world. The Baker Street has a youthful trend-setting theme, while the Bayswater emphasises the brand’s sportiness and handling prowess.

Both limited edition models will go on sale in Australia in May. The Baker Street package adds $1950 to the price of the Cooper and Cooper D, while the Bayswater pack adds $3400 to the Cooper and Cooper D and $2700 to the Cooper S.

Unique to the Baker Street models is the Rooftop Grey metallic paint with black, V-shaped bonnet stripes. The body is also available in white or black. The high-gloss black 16-inch alloy wheels match the roof and mirror caps. The interior gets exclusive materials and surfaces, along with the MMI Navigation system.

The Bayswater model gets its own unique paint colour – Kite Blue – and can also be ordered in black, grey or Radiant Blue. The exterior is finished with 17-inch black alloy wheels, a black roof and sports stripes across the bonnet – the right one blue and the left one grey. The mirror caps follow the same blue/grey pattern.

Inside, the leather seats get side bolsters, a metallic sheen and blue/grey contrast stitching – a theme also carried over to the handbrake and gearshift levers. Piano black plastic is also used for some inserts. Completing the Bayswater kit is the Chrome Line interior package and a Harmon/Kardon audio system.

The Baker Street name is synonymous with fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, and 2012 marks 125 years since Arthur Conan Doyle released his first story about the famous character. Bayswater is one of the most vibrant areas of London, with a high density of bars and restaurants.

The two special editions follow Mini’s earlier London-themed cars, the Camden and Park Lane from 2009.

  • Cooper D Baker Street – $36,700
  • Cooper Bayswater – $34,900
