2012 Audi R8 Spyder V8 in Australia mid-year

The Audi R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI V8 will complete the German brand’s flagship sports line-up in Australia when the first of the special-order supercars hits local showrooms in mid-2012.

The R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI six-speed manual is priced from $300,400 before on-road costs, while the R tronic six-speed sequential version costs $316,400. As a result, the new ‘entry-level’ variants undercut the existing 5.2-litre V10 models by more than $75,000.

The R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI is powered by a 316kW/430Nm 4.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine, which rockets the cloth-top from 0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds. It trails the 5.2 FSI V10 model by 70kW/100Nm, and is seven-tenths slower in the sprint.

The R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI features 19-inch alloy wheels, magnetic ride suspension, advanced parking system with rear-view mirror, xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, sports seats with Alcantara leather and a windbreaker for top-down comfort.

The launch control system ensures optimal starts off the line while Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive can vary the power delivery ratio to the wheels from 15:85 front-to-rear to 30:70.

Audi says it will only bring the R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI to Australia for special customer orders, ensuring its exclusivity.

Last year, Audi Australia sold 54 R8s, up 32 per cent over 2010.
