2010-2011 Mitsubishi ASX recalled in Australia

Mitsubishi Motors Australia has recalled 7647 Mitsubishi ASX compact SUVs over a potential defect with the cars’ power steering system.

The recalled ASX vehicles were produced between June 11, 2010 and August 10, 2011.

The official recall notice on the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) website explains:

“The fixing method of the electrical wiring harness connected to the Electronic Power Steering Control Unit (EPS-ECU) may be inappropriate.

“There exists the potential for the power steering function to become inoperative, resulting in an increased steering effort required by the driver.”

Mitsubishi Australia’s Caitlin Beale said the recall was a precautionary measure issued at the head office in Japan. She said there have been no reports of power steering failures in Australian cars and said it was unclear whether there had been any reports or incidents overseas.

Beale said Mitsubishi had decided to replace the entire power steering control unit to limit the service time for customers. She said vehicles would be in and out of repair shops on the same day, with the recall conducted free of charge.

Mitsubishi Australia is contacting all owners of affected vehicles at their last known address by email. Mitsubishi encourages customers to make an appointment with their local dealer to complete the recall repair.
