Ferrari: New Cars 2012

The Prancing Horse brand steps into bold new territory in Australia in 2012 with the arrival of the four-wheel drive Ferrari FF shooting brake in January. The next highlight comes at March’s Geneva motor show, where the production version of the Ferrari 599 replacement will debut. Ferrari’s new flagship sports car is set to arrive in Australia in 2013. The New Year also marks the 60th anniversary of the Ferrari in Australia, and the company is planning a series of events to help local fans to celebrate the milestone.

FERRARI FF

Vehicle type: Sports car. Timing: January

The first examples of the 612 Scaglietti replacement land in Australia in the early weeks of 2012. The four-seat four-wheel drive FF is priced from $625,000, making it $73,000 less than the superseded 612, but still considerably more expensive than its key competitors, like the Aston Martin Rapide, Bentley Continental GT and the Porsche Panamera. The 485kW/683Nm 6.3-litre V12-powered Ferrari FF accelerates from 0-100km/h in 3.7 seconds and has a top speed of 335km/h. The shooting brake design means there’s 450 litres of luggage space in the boot, which expands to 800 litres with the rear seats folded forwards.

FERRARI 458 SPIDER

Vehicle type: Sports car. Timing: Mid-2012

Ferrari’s hottest convertible will arrive in Australia less than one year after starring at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show. The Ferrari 458 Spider is powered by the same 425kW/540Nm naturally aspirated 4.5-litre engine as the Italia, and the Maranello engineers claims its sprints from 0-100km/h in an identical 4.3 seconds. The Spider’s 25kg folding aluminium hard-top can be raised in 14 seconds and stows between the two-seat cabin and the rear-mounted engine. Australian prices are yet to be confirmed, although as the 430 Spider was around $40,000 more expensive than the 430 coupe, expect the 458 Spider to start at around $565,000.

FERRARI CALIFORNIA (UPDATE)

Vehicle type: Sports car. Timing: Mid-2012

Three years after it first arrived in Australia, the compact California convertible gets a mid-life upgrade in the middle of 2012 (2011 model shown). The California is expected to benefit from a new drivetrain, potentially bringing it up to speed with the 425kW 4.5-litre Ferrari 458. If you’re keen, expect to part with a sum similar to the California’s current $459,650 Australian price.
