BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe Unveiled

BMW has taken the wraps off its all-new 6 Series Gran Coupe. Based on the 6 Series Coupe (which is based off the 5 Series sedan platform), the Gran Coupe adds two extra doors but keeps the stylish and sleek look established by the 6 Series Coupe.

As the first four-door coupe in the history of the brand, BMW has ensured exclusivity with exclusive equipment and features, along with an additional 113mm of length on top of the 6 Series Coupe to accommodate rear seat passengers in comfort. A 4+1 configuration allowed BMW to make more curvaceous seats for rear seat passengers, with the option of legally carrying a fifth passenger if neccessary. Additionally, a through-loading facility in the back seats has increased practicality, coupled with an increased boot capacity from 460 litres to 1,265 litres.

Under the bonnet, drivers will have the option of three engines. The first cab off the rank is the BMW TwinPower Turbo 640i. Producing 235kW and 450Nm of torque from a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder engine. All engine options are mated to BMW's eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Drivers after an eco option can choose the 640i Gran Coupe, producing 230kW and a mammoth 630Nm of torque. The 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged six-cylinder diesel engine consumes a meagre 5.5L/100km through the combined cycle, with an equally impressive 0-100km/h dash of 5.4-seconds.

Finally, true driving enthusiasts are spoilt for choice with the magic 650i Gran Coupe. Producing 330kW and 650Nm, the 4.4-litre V8 uses two turbochargers to leap the Gran Coupe from 0-100km/h in an impressive 4.6-seconds. Further, drivers can now choose between either a rear-wheel-drive 650i Gran Coupe or an all-wheel-drive xDrive 650i Gran Coupe variant, which gets to 100km/h .1-seconds quicker courtesy of the all-paw system.

Electric steering and Dynamic Damper Control gives drivers an enhanced feel behind the wheel, without losing the traditional BMW handling characteristics. Integral Active Steering will be available as an option on the Gran Coupe, allowing the rear wheels to turn in by up to three degrees to assist with steering sharpness.

Fuel economy is maximised across the 6 Series Gran Coupe range with 'ECO PRO', a stop-start system for all engine variants.

As well as the eight-speed sports automatic transmission and Dynamic Damper Control, the high-quality and extensive range of standard equipment awaiting BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe customers in Germany includes electrically adjustable leather seats, 2-zone automatic climate control, xenon headlights, 18-inch light-alloy wheels, the Radio Professional with HiFi loudspeaker system, and automatically dimming exterior and rear-view mirrors. The selection of exclusive options, meanwhile, allows customers to add their own individual touch. Highlights of the optional equipment range include adaptive LED headlights and the Bang & Olufsen High-End Surround Sound System.

The new 6 Series Gran Coupe goes up against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz CLS and Audi A7.

Australian timing hasn't been announced yet, but we will keep you posted as soon as we find out.
