Subaru BRZ revealed: part two of the “Toyobaru”

The 2012 Subaru BRZ has been revealed on the eve of its 2011 Tokyo motor show debut.

Pictures of the new Subaru BRZ rear-wheel-drive sports car show the company’s joint venture project with Toyota is more than just a twin under the skin to the Toyota 86 unveiled on Sunday.

The two coupes share virtually identical suspension - front struts and double-A-arm rear - and engine, a 2.0-litre direct injection "boxer" four-cylinder, though the exterior styling wasn't expected to be mirrored so closely.

Beyond the obvious badge differences, only subtle visual differences - such as headlight shape, grille and foglight housing at the front - distinguish the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86.

There seems to be even less change at the rear of the BRZ, while the alloy wheel design is also shared with the Toyota 86.

The Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 both produce 147kW from their naturally aspirated engine, with peak torque measured at 205Nm.

Toyota will bring the 86 to Australia in mid 2012 with pricing expected to start somewhere below $40,000, though Subaru Australia has yet to confirm whether it will follow suit with its twin.

CarAdvice will be at tomorrow’s Tokyo motor show media day to bring you further coverage of the Subaru BRZ, Toyota 86 and all the other major model reveals and whacky concepts.
