2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe sneak peek ahead of Detroit

Hyundai has given us a sneak peek at the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe ahead of the rear-wheel drive sports car’s debut at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January.

The two teaser images appeared on Hyundai Motor Company’s official Korean-language blog. They confirm earlier rumours and spy shots that suggested the new model would adopt the latest evolution of the brand’s Fluidic Sculpture design language.

The new front end is more aggressive than the outgoing model. A single, gaping mouth – reminiscent of its Veloster and i40 siblings – has replaced the small upper grille and wide, pinched lower intake. The bonnet is more muscular and the headlights now have a softer edge.

At the rear, the taillights are now cleaner, with sharper, flowing details.

No powertrain details have been confirmed just yet, although the new model is expected to carry over its 2.0-litre turbocharged and 3.8-litre V6 petrol engines.

The current engines produce 160kW/294Nm and 228kW/361Nm respectively, and reports suggest both are in line to receive small power boosts. Some have suggested the V6 could be tweaked to produce up to 242kW, putting it about on par with the Nissan 370Z.

The 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe will go on sale in South Korea and the US from early next year.

In August, Hyundai Australia confirmed the Genesis Coupe would go on sale Down Under, but could not provide details about specifications or timing. The rear-wheel drive coupe is unlikely to hit local showrooms before 2013.
