2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster Australian price: $487,500

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster will cost just under half a million dollars when it arrives in Australia in January 2012.

Mercedes-Benz Australia has confirmed the SLS AMG Roadster will be priced from $487,500 before on-road costs. The soft-top model demands an $18,680 premium over the iconic gullwing coupe.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster is essentially an SLS AMG gullwing without a roof. Both are powered by a 6.2-litre V8 that produces 420kW of power and 650Nm of torque.

Despite weighing an extra 40kg (1660kg vs 1620kg), the Roadster’s performance data is on par with the coupe: 0-100km/h in 3.8 seconds, 0-200km/h in 11.3 seconds, top speed of 317km/h, combined cycle fuel consumption of 13.3 litres/100km.

The Roadster incorporates a fixed rollover protection system and eight airbags, including two adaptive front airbags, two knee-bags, two side-bags and two window-bags.

The fabric roof can be opened and closed in just 11 seconds while driving at speeds of up to 50km/h. It can be ordered in three different colours – black, red and beige – to suit or contrast the nine exterior and eight interior colours.

The Roadster’s 173-litre boot capacity is unaffected by the position of the roof, and only three litres shy of the coupe.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG manufacturer’s list prices (excluding government and dealer charges):

  • SLS AMG – $468,820
  • SLS AMG Roadster – $487,500
