Skoda Yeti Preview

CarAdvice is at the Australian launch of the Skoda Yeti in Alice Springs.

It sounds like the ultimate fish out of water scenario: an abominable snowman in the middle of the outback. Clearly Skoda Australia wants to prove its kooky new compact SUV is a bit of a surprise packet, and one capable of leaving the city and taking on the rough stuff.

The Skoda Yeti will be available at two distinct specification levels in Australia: the entry-level Yeti 77TSI front-wheel drive petrol, and the high-grade 103TDI all-wheel drive diesel. The 77kW/175Nm 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine is shared with the recently launched Skoda Fabia, as well as the Volkswagen Polo and Golf. The 103kW/320Nm 2.0-litre diesel engine is also found across a diverse range of Volkswagen Group vehicles, including the Skoda Scout and the Volkswagen Tiguan.

At $26,290, the base model is well positioned to steal sales from larger and more expensive SUVs like the Holden Captiva 5, Honda CR-V and Hyundai ix35, and will also provide strong competition for the slightly less expensive Nissan Dualis, Mitsubishi ASX and the Kia Sportage.

At the other end, the Yeti diesel will offer an alternative to the Tiguan, Subaru Forester, Peugeot 3008, and other top-spec compact SUVs.

Both models will be among the most frugal SUVs in the compact class. The 77TSI has a combined cycle fuel consumption of 6.6 litres/100km (7.0 litres/100km for the DSG), while the 103TDI is slightly more frugal at 6.2 litres/100km (6.7 litres/100km DSG).

The Yeti 77TSI gets seven airbags, 16-inch alloy wheels, individually removable rear seats, Bluetooth phone connectivity, cruise control, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, handbrake and gear knob.

The Yeti 103TDI adds 17-inch alloys, underbody protection, silver roof rails, auto lights and wipers, fog lights, dual-zone climate control, height-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support, chrome interior highlights, additional stowage compartments and adjustable boot hooks.

Skoda Yeti manufacturer’s list prices (excluding government and dealer charges):

  • 77TSI FWD six-speed manual – $26,290
  • 77TSI FWD seven-speed DSG – $28,590
  • 103TDI AWD six-speed manual – $35,690
  • 103TDI AWD six-speed DSG – $38,990
