2012 Audi A3 to get 1.4 engine with cylinder deactivation technology

The next-generation 2012 Audi A3 will come in four different variants, including the conventional three-door hatch and a cabriolet, as well as a new four-door sedan - previewed at the 2011 Geneva Motor show in March - and a new five-door Sportback four-door coupe. The new variant lineup will follow in the footsteps of Audi's larger models, including the Audi A4 and Audi A5.

In a recent Auto Motor und Sport report in Germany, Audi design chief Stefan Sielaff revealed that all variants would showcase an interior layout inspired by the Audi A3 e tron concept shown at the Auto Shanghai 2011 show. All models will also be built on Volkswagen Group’s new MQB modular platform.

As for the upcoming powertrains, the 2012 Audi A3 will receive a few new setups. Making up the new entry-level trim specifications will be a new 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 103kW of power. To ensure optimum fuel efficiency is achieved, it is understood the new engine will feature cylinder deactivation technology which will shut down cylinders according to the driving conditions.

For instance, during light load journeys, two cylinders will be deactivated to conserve fuel. The moment more power is required, the others will seamlessly fire into action, providing, effectively, fuel consumption you could expect from a two-cylinder motor in certain circumstances.

Other new engines said to join the lineup include a natural gas version and a new three-cylinder diesel variant. Both of these will offer a clear focus on offering maximum fuel efficiency and frugal motoring.

The production version 2012 Audi A3 is expected to be unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in in March.
