Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG Coupe arrives

After the recent launch of the C-Class Coupe, Mercedes-Benz has brought the C 63 AMG Coupe to Australia with a starting price of $154,800.

The Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG sedan has always been one of our favourite cars here in the CarAdvice office. Be it the insanely aggressive sound, the styling or just the whole package in total, we’ve always had a soft spot for this M3 competitor. Up until now the BMW M3 has had it over the C 63 since it has been available as a two-door Coupe.

With the C 63 AMG Coupe, Mercedes-Benz can take the battle straight to BMW’s M3 Coupe, with both cars representing the ultimate performance choice in their segments.

The C 63 AMG Coupe is the third coupe now available with the AMG enhancements (CLS 63 AMG and CL 63 AMG), it’s also the most affordable.

With a kerb weight of 1,730kg (including 75kg driver), the C 63 AMG coupe is a good 100kg heavier than the M3 but thanks to its AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine, it accelerates from 0-100km/h in 4.4 seconds (0.2 seconds faster than the M3 auto and 0.4 seconds faster than the M3 manual). 336 kW and 600 Nm of torque drive the rear wheels through an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission (no manual). In comparison the M3’s 4.0-litre V8 has 309kW and 400Nm of torque.

Fuel consumption is rated at a respectable 12L/100km (New European Driving Cycle – ADR tested figures currently unavailable) .

As with the E 63 AMG we covered a few days ago, the Silver Shadow C 63 AMG Coupe has the option of an AMG performance package ($14,900), which will see its power increased to 358kW and the 0-100km/h time down to 4.3 seconds. To give you some perspective, a $250,000+ Aston Martin V8 Vantange does the same dash in 4.9 seconds (although, it does it with much more style).

As with the C-Class Coupe range, COMAND Online provides a whole new generation of in-car entertainment systems, including phone book transfer, display of SMS messages, wireless music reproduction via Bluetooth and a USB as well as internet access (tethered via your smart phone).

CarAdvice is scheduled behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG Coupe in the next few weeks; stay tuned for a full review.
