Maserati Cinqueporte: Italian SUV gets production name

Maserati has registered the name 'Cinqueporte' and is expected to apply it to the production version of the Maserati Kubang concept SUV. Cinqueporte literally translates to 'five door'.

Maserati first unveiled the Maserati Kubang concept SUV at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show last month, showcasing an elegant SUV body in tune with Maserati's latest design language. At the time, Maserati answered all those skeptical about its true Maserati pedigree, saying,

"Style, engine, suspensions, brakes, handling and performance will all be 100 per cent Maserati in picture-perfect continuity with the brand’s core values of sportiness, style, elegance, luxury, performance and craftsmanship”

According to the critics, the only thing it needed was a more appropriate badge. Enter Cinqueporte, which sounds much more like a modern-day Maserati, and is destined to sit perfectly alongside the Quattroporte 'four dour' sports luxury sedan.

Official specifications on the production model Cinqueporte, if that's what it ends up being called, are yet to be revealed. But the SUV will be built on the new Jeep Grand Cherokee platform under Fiat's ownership of Chrysler, and it will likely feature the company's 4.7-litre V8 producing 330kW and 500Nm.

The Maserati Cinqueporte SUV is set to hit the market sometime in 2013. What do you think of the potential new name? Is it better than Kubang?
