As our previous 2012 BMW 3 Series spy shots outlined, BMW is looking to release a hybrid version of the new model, set to be called the BMW ActiveHybrid 3. It's expected to feature a 3.0-litre TwinPower turbo petrol engine linked up to an electric motor hybrid drive system.
The 2012 BMW 3 Series will also launch a complete turbocharged engine lineup, ranging from a BMW 316i said to use a small capacity of possibly three or four cylinders, turbocharged to produce around 100kW. Next in the range will be the 320i which is said to be powered by a revised version of the new 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing around 135kW.
Making up the upper segments of the range will be the new BMW 328i which will use the top-shelf 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 180kW of power and 350Nm of torque, followed by the flagship BMW 335i using a slightly revised 3.0-litre turbocharged straight six.
A range of turbo-diesel engines is also expected to be on offer with the new 3 Series, including a European 316d, producing around 85kW, a 2.0-litre 323d producing around 105kW and a flagship 330d producing around 184kW.
