Kia GT Coupe – potential for hybrid or four-cylinder engine?

The recently unveiled Kia GT coupe has got potential to work with a hybrid or a smaller four-cylinder engine, according to Kia's design chief Peter Schreyer.

The rear-wheel drive Kia GT Concept was recently unveiled at the Frankfurt motorshow with a 3.3-litre turbocharged V6 (290kW and 534Nm of torque) connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Mr Schreyer believes it can also work with other powerplant configurations. “It would still be fast, but return good fuel economy, too.” he told AutoExpress.

Schreyer, who has been largely credited with bringing the Korean brand into a new era, said the he wants to make cars that he'd "be proud to sit in, be seen in and to drive", explaining that Kia never built cars like that before.

Of course the Kia GT Coupe is a little bit different, it signals the Korean brands entrance into the rear-wheel drive Coupe segment. It's meant to act as a halo car for Kia, which alongside sister company Hyundai, has seen significant increase in sales over the last few years.

Do you think Kia should bother with a hybrid or four-cylinder version of its GT Coupe? Or just stick with a high-powered variant for brand building purposes only?
