The world’s most popular car colour is… white

After 10 years at the top, silver has been overtaken by white as the world’s most popular car colour.

Data released by PPG Industries, the world’s leading manufacturer of transportation coatings, reveals approximately 21 per cent of 2011 model year vehicles have been finished in white, while silver and black are tied in second place on 20 per cent.

Vehicles colour preferences are decidedly different depending on the region.

In our Asia/Pacific region, silver cars have accounted for one quarter of all purchases so far in 2011. White is the next most popular colour (23 per cent), followed by black (17 per cent), red (10 per cent), grey (eight per cent) and blue (seven per cent).

The figures in Europe are very different, however, where black is the most popular car colour (26 per cent), followed by white (19 per cent), silver (16 per cent) and grey (15 per cent).

According to a PPG survey, more than three-quarters of car buyers said exterior colour was a factor in their purchase decision, and almost one-third said they would be willing to pay extra for a vehicle that expresses their personality through colour.

Forty per cent said they would prefer a larger range of colours to choose from when buying a car.

And they may get their way soon, as PPG recently presented 70 new colour samples to automotive designers for consideration as they design 2014-2015 model year cars.

Among the new colours were Grape Spritz, a blue fused with a purple highlight; Muddy Waters, a tone of brown with a pearl lustre effect; Pot O’Gold, a light green with a hint of gold; White Nougat, a soft creamy white with a highlight sparkle; and Goldeluxe, a silver with an influence of a gold.
