2012 Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG with 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8?

When we first drove the Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG, there was lots of love expressed for the 5.5-litre supercharged V8 powering the beast. Be it the unbelievably loud but exhilirating sound from the side-mounted exhausts, or the general up-and-go feel of the whole package, either way, it's a weapon.

So it's with caution that we bring you photos of what may be the updated G55 AMG, powered by Merc's new 5.5 litre twin-turbo V8 engine.

Photos of this G55 AMG found its way into our inbox yesterday and with closer inspection we can see a new bumper, which would be necessary for the new power plant and upgraded brakes. It's expected that the 2012  model will also gain new mirrors, air intakes, LED daytime running lamps plus other features.

The modern twin-turbo V8, already in use on the CLS 63 AMG (386kW and 700Nm), will be a welcomed addition to the iconic G class which in its current supercharged application develops a very healthy 373kW and 700Nm of torque.

Perhaps the biggest improvement will not be in power but in fuel economy, with the turbo V8 expected to use noticeably less fuel than the supercharged variant.

Rumour has it Mercedes-Benz will show off the new G55 AMG at the Detroit motorshow early next year.
