Australians prefer buying cars online than through dealers

The majority of Australians believe it is easier to buy a car online than head to a yard and battle it out with a dealer.

A survey of 602 Australians (commissioned by Australian car insurer Bingle and conducted by Newspoll) found 64 per cent felt buying a car online was easier than dealing with a car salesman.

More than three-quarters of respondents admitted they shopped around online to find the best deal on a car, while a similar percentage said they believed they had saved money by purchasing their car online.

Bingle spokeswoman Melanie Vine said Australians were more confident than ever in making big purchases over the internet.

“When it comes to online shopping people think of easily posted items like clothing, books or CDs, but there’s also real growth in sales of big ticket items like the family car,” Ms Vine said. “Growing comfort in making big purchases like these online, clearly shows people trust online shopping more than ever.

“With the research indicating 74 per cent of people believe they’ve saved money buying their car online, the benefits are more than just avoiding a slick salesperson.“

The survey found that 40 per cent of Australians said it was ‘easy’ to buy and sell a car online.

Despite the perceived simplicity, Ms Vine warned online car shoppers should still be prudent in the purchasing and selling process to make sure they were not being ripped off.

“We’d remind people on both sides of the transaction, don’t rush into a sale or purchase,” she said.

“Accompany the potential buyer on their test drive, have a reputable mechanic look over your soon to be new car, and do all the checks and research you can upfront.”
