2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe DTM race car at Frankfurt Motor Show

Mercedes-Benz, with the help of Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg, has unveiled the new 2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe DTM racing car at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, currently in progress.

The new touring car will compete next year in the German Touring Car Masters (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters) up against its main rivals; the BMW M3 DTM and the Audi A5 DTM cars. It will be powered by a race-certified 4.0-litre V8 engine producing around 373kW (500hp).

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz DTM car features a full carbon fibre monocoque chassis incorporated in with a race-spec sophisticated steel roll cage cabin structure. The structure also includes six specific crumple zones which absorb impacts in key areas.

As far the the body goes, it takes the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe design and extends upon that drastically. There's wings, foils and vents on every panel, all contributing to enhance aerodynamic downforce and to improve air flow through and around the car - take a look at the size of that rear wing.

Michael Schumacher spoke about the new C-Class Coupe DTM car and its new level of safety upon the unveiling. He said,

"The new 2012 Mercedes-Benz DTM car looks fantastic, but what I find even more impressive than the car's visual appearance is the new safety concept with its innovative safety cell and more advanced carbon-fiber crash structures. This safety standard is exemplary and constitutes, in my opinion, the benchmark for touring car racing."

Mercedes-Benz will be looking to take on the other German giants during next year's DTM championship. What do you think of it? Dramatic enough for you?
