Just hours after unleashing the production-ready 2012 Ford Focus ST, the Blue Oval brand has given hot hatch fans another Frankfurt treat with the unveiling of the Ford Fiesta ST Concept. Don’t let the ‘concept’ tag scare you though. The Ford Fiesta ST is on its way, make no mistake about that.

Ford group vice president, global product development, Derrick Kuzak, did everything but put a date on it when he spoke about the red-hot Fiesta ST Concept at the Frankfurt show.

“The Fiesta has a rich history of high-performance models so a new ST performance model is a logical next step in our performance vehicle strategy for our global small cars,” Mr Kuzak said.

“With a racing silhouette inspired by the global Fiesta race and rally cars currently competing on the world stage, and influenced by the unique appearance of the all-new Focus ST, the new Fiesta ST Concept is an exciting demonstration of the road-going Fiesta’s future potential.”

If the Fiesta ST follows the same timeline as the Focus ST, expect a road-ready version to follow in around 12 months’ time, with production likely for the beginning of 2013.

Like the Fiesta RS WRC rally car, the three-door Ford Fiesta ST Concept is powered by a 1.6-litre EcoBoost turbocharged petrol engine.

Maximum power is rated at 132kW, while peak torque is a punchy 240Nm. Ford says accelerating from 0-100km/h will take less than seven seconds, and insists the Fiesta ST will have a top speed in excess of 220km/h.

Similar to the 2.0-litre EcoBoost in the upcoming Focus ST, the Fiesta’s engine features Twin-independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) and has been specially developed for the ST variant.

Teamed with a six-speed manual transmission, Ford says it is targeting average CO2 emissions of less than 140g/km, which roughly translates to a combined cycle fuel consumption of around 6.0 litres/100km.

From a design perspective, the Fiesta ST Concept borrows heavily from its bigger brother, and we think that’s a pretty good thing. The gaping trapezoidal mouth, revised headlights, lower front bumper elements, rear spoiler and diffuser, and the Y-spoke 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels are all inspired by the Focus.


Although we are yet to see inside the ST Concept, Ford says the Molten Orange colour theme continues throughout, including the Recaro sports seats and other contrasting trim highlights.

Ford engineers say the ST’s tuned suspension has been designed to “flatter less-experienced drivers while rewarding those seeking to push the limits of the Fiesta ST’s sports performance”.

Ford director of global performance vehicles, Jost Capito, said the Fiesta ST project is proof that the Ford Global Performance Plan “has legs”.

“The Fiesta ST Concept shows in the most dramatic way possible that the qualities that define an ST are not limited to one model,” Mr Capito said.

“The potential for delivering the ST experience to an even wider audience are laid bare by this striking new concept.”
