BMW has been named the most sustainable automotive company in the recent Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) results. This is BMW's seventh consecutive year at the top of the charts in the Automobiles and Parts sector.

The DJSI ranks 2500 of the world's largest corporations according to their environmental impact and in terms of of economic, environmental and social criteria. The rankings were introduced in 1999, and since then, BMW has been the only automotive manufacturer to appear in the list of indexes for every subsequent year.

BMW first introduced an environmental officer specifically to guide BMW into environmentally-friendly paths, and was regarded as the first manufacturer to hire such staff in the world at the time. In 2009, BMW introduced the Sustainability Board, which consisted of all members of the Board of Management at BMW. Dr Norbert Reithofer, chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, recently said,

"The success of the BMW Group is built on a long-term approach and responsible action. We are pleased to be recognised by the renowned Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes.

"Being ranked sector leader for the last seven years underscores our corporate strategy and approach. I would like to thank all of our company’s 95,000 employees whose day-to-day work makes this progress possible."
