Hyundai Veloster to be priced around $25,000 in Australia

The all-new Hyundai Veloster should be priced from approximately $25,000 in Australia based on the positioning of the quirky new hatch in other international markets.

While new vehicle prices rarely convert directly from one currency to another, the positioning of the Veloster within Hyundai’s US range gives us a very good indication of how the new model is likely to be positioned and priced when it goes on sale in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2011.

In the US, the Veloster is priced between the all-new Elantra compact sedan and the medium-sized Sonata (called the i45 in Australia).

The six-speed manual Veloster starts at $US17,300, making it just $US900 more than the entry-level Elantra ($US16,445) and some $2395 less than the base model Sonata ($US19,695).

In Australia, the recently launched Hyundai Elantra range is priced from $20,590 while the comparative Hyundai i45 model with the 2.4-litre petrol engine starts at $31,090.

Based on this comparison, a starting price of around $25,000 for the Veloster  (before on-road costs) seems reasonable for the Australian market.

At that price, the Veloster would compete with the Kia Cerato Koup (priced from $23,690), as well as mid-range small sedans and hatches like the Mazda3, Holden Cruze, Ford Focus, etc.

The Veloster will be launched with just one engine: a 1.6-litre petrol unit producing 103kW of power and 167Nm of torque. A six-speed manual will be offered alongside a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

A turbocharged variant of the Veloster – believed to produce 155kW and 265Nm – has been rumoured for other markets, but is yet to be confirmed either overseas or in Australia.

The Hyundai Veloster features a unique three-door layout, which in Australia will be configured with one door on the right side of the car and two doors on the left. (The advantages of this design were highlighted in a banned Veloster commercial we featured last week.)

The Veloster pricing revelation follows our earlier report that Hyundai Australia is committed to introducing the Hyundai Genesis Coupe to local showrooms, with a launch potentially coming in 2013.
