2013 Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG spy shots

Mercedes-Benz has been spotted testing a 2013 Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG prototype out on public streets. This is the first time we've seen an example of the sporty AMG version undergoing testing.

Telltale signs that this is a tuned AMG version is the inclusion of larger brakes behind a larger tyre and wheel package, big air intakes incorporated into the front upper and lower grille and a larger, twin-outlet exhaust setup. Our spy photographers tell us this prototype sounded particularly nice compared with the normal A-Class models they have seen undergoing testing as well.

It is still a little early for concrete details and specifications on the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG variant, even so, reports say the A-Class will come with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing between 240kW and 260kW of power.

The new engine is expected to be connected up to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive running gear. This setup will pitch the A-Class AMG directly against the Volkswagen Golf R, as well as the Audi RS 3 and BMW 1 Series M Coupe to some extent.

The official name of the new A-Class AMG is yet to be confirmed, but international speculation suggest it will be named a Mercedes-Benz A25 AMG. We'll keep you updated though.
