Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe launched

The all-new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe has been launched in Australia with prices starting from $58,900.

The C-Class Coupe marks a new chapter for the German marquee, which has previously never offered an official coupe version of its C-class.

Despite the existence of the CLC, Mercedes believes having a proper rival to its direct competitors (namely the 3 Series coupe) is the right way forward.

From the outside the Coupe differentiates itself from the C-Class sedan by losing two doors and exhibiting a more silhouette shape.

Compared with the sedan, the coupe’s front doors have increased in size by 30cm whilst the overall vehicle height is down by 41mm.

Despite the downsizing, Mercedes believes the C-Class Coupe offers a proper four-seater arrangement. Practicality has also not been sacrificed as the boot has been reduced by just 15L compared to the sedan.

Majority of equipment levels have been matched or improved over its sedan siblings with a jump from the same model sedan to coupe variants coming in at a $2,000 premium.

Mercedes-Benz Australia will offer one diesel and three petrol variants to start with, with the C63 AMG Coupe landing in October.

The C180 Coupe is aimed at the CLC buyers (over 3,500 sold in AUS over the last three years), with the $58,900 representing a $400 premium on top of the last CLC evolution edition.

The C180 is powered by a 1.8-lire four cylinder direct injection turbo with has 115kW and 250Nm of torque. It consumes 7.3L/100km and can sprint from 0-100km/h in 8.9 seconds.

If that’s not good enough, $69,900 will buy you either a C250 petrol or diesel Coupe. The petrol variant is powered by an uprated version of the same engine as the C180 but with 150kW and 310Nm of torque. It consumes 7L/100km and rushes to 100km/h in 7.2 seconds.

If you can justify it, the C250CDI Coupe, does seem to represent the best value for money in the range. With the same starting price as the equivalent petrol, the 2.1-litre four-cylinder twin turbo diesel has 150kW and a massive 500Nm of torque. Best of all, it sips a measly 5.1L of diesel per 100km and is actually faster to 100km/h by 0.1 second (7.1 seconds) than the C250 petrol.

Of course it wouldn’t be a proper coupe range if Mercedes hadn’t included sportier variants. Until the C63 AMG gets here, the C350 Coupe is the pick of the bunch if performance is top priority. Powered by a 3.5-litre naturally aspirated V6 petrol, 225kW and 370Nm of torque will see you hit the 100km/h mark in just 6 seconds. Meanwhile it drinks a reasonable 8.3L/100km.

All variants are driven through the rear-wheels by a seven-speed automatic transmission (no manual available), but only the diesel is equipped with start-stop technology. The petrol variants should get this feature in the near future.

Mercedes will offer all launch variants an “edition 1” options pack which includes AMG sports styling 18-inch alloy wheels, piano lacquer trim, comfort pack, memory and heated seats, keyless go, climatised front seats and thermotronic climate control. That will set you back a reasonable $6,100 in the C180 (for leather upholstery) or just $4,360 for all other variants.
