Victoria’s red light, speed cameras rake in $250 million

The Victorian Government collected almost $250 million from fines generated by speed and red light camera last financial year.

That’s more than $28,500 an hour.

In total, $249,716,864 in fines was handed out for 1,326,651 different offences between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011.

The majority of offenders were captured by mobile camera systems, with 44 per cent of infringements and roughly two-fifths of total camera revenue coming from mobile sources.

Cameras on the Geelong Rd system raked in the most revenue. The Melbourne-bound camera on Forsyth Road Bridge in Hoppers Crossing snapped 24,410 speeding drivers and collected more than $4.1 million dollars in the financial year – or $11,369 every day.

Heading towards Geelong, another 17,533 fines were issued at more than $3 million.

Other top earners:

  • At the intersection of the Frankston Fwy off-ramp and the Dandenong-Frankston Rd in Frankston – $3.2 million
  • On the Western Ring Rd in Sunshine West heading southbound in lane four – $2.9 million
  • At the intersection of Kings Way and Park St in Melbourne – $2.9 million
  • At the intersection of Elizabeth and Victoria streets in Melbourne – $2.8 million
  • On the Westgate Fwy in Altona North heading to Melbourne – $2.8 million
  • On the Princes Fwy in Lara from the Avalon Rd Bridge heading to Melbourne – $2.7 million

The cameras at the intersection of Cemetery Rd West and Royal Pde in Parkville, and at the intersection of Maroondah Hwy and Springvale Rd in Nunawading were the least fruitful – both capturing just one offender and accumulating fines of $299 each.

As of July 2011, the penalty for exceeding the speed limit by less than 10km/h in Victoria is $153 and the loss of one demerit point.

Exceeding the limit by 25km/h or more leads to a minimum fine of $336, four demerit points and a one-month automatic licence suspension.

The maximum penalty for breaking the speed limit by 45km/h or more is a $611 fine, eight demerit points and a 12-month automatic licence suspension.

Failing to obey traffic lights incurs a penalty of $305 and three demerit points.
