Cadillac ELR production confirmed
Cadillac will introduce a production version of the Cadillac Converj Concept into the company's future line-up. To be called the Cadillac ELR, the large sports coupe will feature a hybrid powertrain with range-extending technology.
The new Cadillac ELR will apparently adopt a similar Voltec powertrain to the one in the Chevrolet Volt. It will consist of a small four-cylinder engine which will be used to recharge a T-shaped lithium-ion battery pack.
The ELR will drive primarily on electric power, rather than a normal hybrid which relies on both petrol and electric motors. Don Butler, vice president Cadillac marketing, said in a recent statement,
"The [Converj] concept generated instant enthusiasm. Like other milestone Cadillac models of the past, the ELR will offer something not otherwise present - the combination of electric propulsion with striking design and the fun of luxury coupe driving."
Official specifications of the new ELR are still being sorted, although, performance is said be slightly higher than that of the Chevrolet Volt. Cadillac says the ELR will be "as exhilarating as it is responsible". The ELR will also represent a hybrid for the grand touring four-seat coupe market segment for the first time in Chevy's history.
