2013 Dodge Viper spy shots

Dodge has been spotted testing the upcoming 2013 Dodge Viper in Death Valley in the US. It may look like the old Viper from the outside, but Dodge is simply testing new running gear and engine cooling systems using the old body as a disguise.

While the rest of the motoring world is going for more fuel-efficient options and downsizing their engines, the good old Dodge Viper isn't really interested in taking part in any of that. The 2013 Dodge Viper will use an 8.4-litre V10 engine, however, it will showcase some forms of fuel-saving technology to help keep its emissions levels down.

As Fiat now owns Chrysler, and in effect, Dodge. As a result, Fiat will be applying its MultiAir camshaft timing and valvetrain technology to the big V10. The massive unit is expected to produce more than 450kW of power and 760Nm of torque.

As for the visuals, we can expect an all-new front end for the 2013 model, showcasing a modern face with drawn back headlights and a smaller, more pointed lower chin. The rear end is likely to be styled and blended in to present a modern American sports car look.

The 2013 Dodge Viper is expected to be unveiled in full early next year, reportedly at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

What do you think? Has the appeal of the Viper been lost in next-generation motoring, or will the new model still be an American muscle car favourite? Give us your thoughts below.
