Australian hypermilers aim to set fuel economy record across 48 US states

Australian hypermile record holders John and Helen Taylor are hoping to set a new world record by driving in 48 different US states using the least amount of fuel, averaging less than 3.5L/100km.

John and Helen Taylor have already set numerous records in Australia and around the world, including driving a 2002 Peugeot 406 HDi diesel from Melbourne to Rockhampton (2,348.3km) on one tank of fuel; driving a 2006 Volkswagen Golf 1.6 FSI around the world on 24 tanks of fuel, taking 78 days to complete averaging 4.5L/100km for 29,717km; and driving a 2008 Peugeot 308 HDi around the coast of Australia, 14,580km, averaging 3.13L/200km.

The next record the Taylors are aiming to break is to drive at least 15 miles (24km) in 48 different states in the USA using the least amount of fuel. It's a record already held by the couple who drove 15,303km across 48 states using just 11 tanks of fuel in a Volkswagen Jetta TDI in 2008, averaging 3.51L/100km.

This time they are driving a stock Chevrolet Cruze Eco with a manual transmission and hope to extract even more kilometres from each 48-litre tank of fuel. The couple also has a plan to drive up to 2000 miles (3220km) on a single tank of fuel over a particularly easy segment of the trip, averaging around 1.5L/100km - that's either one massive hill or some serious hypermile driving techniques if they can pull it off.

The epic journey is planned to take the couple 23 days, covering around 15,450km. So far they've completed half of the trip and averaged better than 5.1L/100km. They say they are not monitoring numbers closely at this stage but look forward to calculating official numbers at the end of the trip.
