Opel Australia website features Zafira, Meriva, hints at potential introduction

Opel Australia’s public website may reveal the latest secrets about the vehicles we can expect from General Motors’ German division when it hits the market as a stand-alone brand in 2012.

In January, Holden Chairman and Managing Director, Mike Devereux, confirmed the Corsa light car, Astra small car and Insignia medium-large car would be among the first models to join the range, without going into any more detail.

Opel Australia’s website currently has a box on the homepage that says:

What we Australians can look forward to in 2012:

  • A total solar eclipse in the north
  • Success at the London Olympics
  • Driving an Opel

Underneath this box of things to look forward to next year scrolls images of four vehicles: the Insignia, Corsa, Astra Sports Tourer and the Zafira Tourer.

A browse through to the Showroom section of the Opel Australia website reveals a range of six different vehicles: Corsa, Astra and Astra Sports Tourer, Insignia and Insignia Sport Tourer, and the new Meriva.

The Zafira Tourer (a seven-seater people mover) and the Meriva (a van-like hatch in the mould of the Mercedes-Benz B-Class) are perhaps the most interesting, as neither was explicitly named earlier this year.

The Sports Tourer variants of the Astra and Insignia are also intriguing prospects for the local range.

Although images on a website are by no means confirmation of the brand’s future line-up, at the very least they show a connection between the vehicles and Opel Australia.

When asked today, GM Holden’s Shayna Welsh would not be drawn on the exact make-up of Opel Australia’s range.

“It’s a bit early to say. We’re not making any announcements at this point,” Ms Welsh said.

Opel’s global line-up includes a number of other vehicles, including the Antara (similar to the Holden Captiva 5), the Agila, the OPC performance division and a light commercial vehicle range.

Acting as a sister brand to Holden, Opel Australia will provide competition to European brands – particularly Volkswagen – in the increasingly popular premium European segment.
