Toyota to smash Nurburgring record with 260km/h EV sports car

Toyota is confident it will smash the Nurburgring lap record for an electric vehicle when it takes to the track later this month.

The vehicle – known simply as the TMG 100% electric car – is a two-seater sports car developed by Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG), said to be based loosely on the e-Wolf Alpha-1 SRF. It has a top speed of 260km/h and a 0-100km/h acceleration time of just 3.9 seconds.

The current record for an all-electric vehicle – 9min 1.338secs – is held by the Peugeot EX1, although TMG claims to have already eclipsed that mark in during unofficial testing.

TMG director of business operations, Rob Leupen, said he expected the TMG 100% to make a significant improvement during the official timed laps.

"We are extremely confident we can break the record by some distance, which is an indication of how EV performance is continuously improving,” Mr Leupen said.

“TMG is a leader in high-performance powertrains and we want to show the world how far this technology has developed. Our mission is to advance this technology, not only in motorsport but in the automotive sector in general, to deliver products with more performance and better durability for our customers."

TMG general manager electrics and electronics, Ludwig Zeller, said the technology developed for the TMG 100% would filter down to production vehicles.

"We have built up a tremendous amount of knowledge about such high-performance powertrains, particularly battery management systems and vehicle control units, during our development programs,” Mr Zeller said.

“Our lap record attempt brings together this knowledge and it should clearly show the great potential of high-performance electric powertrains."

The record attempt at the Nurburgring Nordschleife will take place on August 29.
