2013 BMW FAST spy shots

BMW has been spotted testing the new BMW FAST (Family Activity Sports Tourer) out on public streets. The FAST will mark the end of an era for BMW as it will be the first ever proper BMW-badged front-wheel car.

The BMW FAST, as it has been named internally, is based on the new UKL1 platform and is expected to come in front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive form. This is the car that will eventually take over the BMW 1 Series, bumping the current 1 Series layout as we know it up to a 2 Series name.

By the looks of these spy shots, the BMW FAST will be relatively large in terms of a C-segment hatch, however, the platform will be used on the upcoming range of MINI models, giving us a bit of an idea of the FAST's proportions.

Under the bonnet, a variety of 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol and diesel engine options are expected, ranging from an extremely fuel efficient unit producing around 56kW, up to a more powerful petrol producing around 116kW.

The new model is set to rival the likes of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class/B-Class as well as the Audi A3, showcasing a mini MPV profile.

The new BMW FAST will hit the showrooms sometime in 2013.
